January in New York City can be a brutal time for frigid temperatures, frigid winds, and icy storms. It sure has me dreaming of putting on the green in the summertime, and indoor practice centers just don’t have the same immersive experience as a scenic outdoor course does. We’re back with the FGSL On-the-Go series for a quick trip to some of my favorite courses in Florida and California. Get ready for some sunshine, lush 18-hole courses, and world-class tournament facilities.
Grab your caddy and let’s hop on the road!
“A club at the finest meeting of land and sea.”
After Mike Strantz remodeled the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula CC in 2003, many of the holes were reversed so that you would have a crisp view of the Pacific Ocean while you measured up your shots. All quiet on the course except for the low roar of the waves crashing in the distance. 72 par. 6,783 yards. Not too far off the neighboring Dunes Course, which also has 72 par and 7,090 yards.
Both courses are top rated spots on Golf Digest, spanning over 400 acres of forest, dunes and coastal landscape and dazzling many members and guest just at the mere sight of its breathtaking natural landscape. But it’s not all looks– the Dunes Course was the site of the Bing Crosby Tournament, now known as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, for eighteen consecutive years.
You can take a virtual tour of the courses on the Country Club website and navigate each hole beforehand to read about the layout, get acclimated, and even read some quotes from visitors and golf experts at the club.
Perhaps it goes without saying that the PGA has phenomenal facilities and resources, with it’s Florida hub of five competition-grade courses. PGA National is a golf haven teeming with abundance, from luxury hotels to spa treatments to a variety of restaurant and bar services to some of the most talented golfers across the country. It is even home to some of the PGA Tour’s most difficult courses– be sure to pay The Champion course a visit if you’re up for a challenge.
From the Ryder Cup to the Senior PGA to the Honda Classic, PGA National is the place to be if you are a competitive and professional golfer looking for quality facilities true to competition game-play. Situated in Palm Beach Gardens Florida, it also has the advantage of a beautiful natural landscape to enhance your golfing experience.
You can do pretty much anything at PGA National, including getting personally fitted for a brand new performance-based custom club through Cool Clubs. The vast amount of space, facilities, and resources is particularly impressive considering the club only opened for the first time in 1981, whereas Monterey dates back to 1924. In less than 50 years, it has become one of the most renowned resorts in the country offering some of the most challenging golf in the world.
